Find out how you can make a difference at each shelter you contact, such as serving meals, providing care for animals, or helping out with disaster relief. If there is a natural disaster near you, you can go online to a directory of government websites and private centers to learn how you can help and lend a hand with triage, medical services, food distribution, logistics, and general victim assistance. Research the backgrounds of the shelters you consider. Find out if the shelter is part of a local, national, or international entity, with any affiliations. If it involves a refuge for battered women, inquire about confidentiality policies, support, and social work intervention. If you want to adopt an animal, get all the specifics in writing, including fee, shots and vaccinations, adoption certificates, and compatibility with family and children.
